Tubal Ligation Reversal

When you underwent tubal ligation, you probably never imagined wanting to get pregnant in the future. If you have previously had your “tubes tied,” we may be able to help you conceive with IVF, INVOcell, or a referral for a tubal reversal. At our Houston, TX, facility, we strive to improve your chances of pregnancy. Find out which treatment option is right for you.

We Can Refer You TO A HIGHLY QUALIFIED GYNECOLOGIC SURGEON

Dr.  Sonja B. Kristiansen does not perform tubal ligation reversal surgery; however, if you are a good candidate for this tubal procedure, she will refer you to a trusted gynecologic surgeon.

What Is Tubal Ligation Reversal?

Tubal reversal is a procedure designed to reverse a tubal ligation. During a tubal ligation, a woman's fallopian tubes are cut, tied, or blocked off to prevent eggs and sperm from joining. During a tubal ligation reversal, the surgeon will reconnect, untie, or reopen your fallopian tubes so you have a chance of conceiving a child once again.

How does the procedure work?

Tubal Ligation Reversal  What to Expect during the Process

Tubal ligation reversal is an outpatient procedure, meaning that you can go home on the same day of your surgery. Here is what you can expect from your first consultation to your post-surgical recovery:

Modern techniques are less invasive and allow many to be treated on an outpatient basis.
Modern techniques are less invasive and allow many to be treated on an outpatient basis.

Consultation

Dr. Kristiansen will evaluate your condition to determine whether tubal ligation is the only cause of infertility. If you have a good chance of pregnancy following a reversal, we will refer you to a highly qualified gynecological surgeon for scheduling. If you do not meet the qualifications for tubal ligation reversal, Dr. Kristiansen can help you conceive with IVF or INVOcell with PGT.

Laparoscopic Examination

To examine your fallopian tubes and assess their condition, your surgeon will insert a tiny laparoscopic camera through a small incision in your abdomen. If the tubes are healthy enough even after the initial ligation, a reversal may be possible.

Incision and Reconstruction

If the ligation is reversible, the surgeon will begin the procedure by making several small incisions in the abdomen. Using laparoscopic instruments, the doctor repairs the fallopian tubes or removes the clips causing the tubes to be blocked. Before closing the incisions, the surgeon will check to make sure that there are no leakages and that the tubes have been successfully reconnected.

Stitches

Your surgeon will carefully close the incisions, and you will remain in the hospital for about three hours after your procedure.

Recovery

Your surgeon will give you detailed instructions on how to recover as well as schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress. You may be prescribed medication to help ease discomfort while you heal. Most women can return to their normal activities within two weeks. However, you should refrain from strenuous activity or exercise until your doctor says you are clear.

The Success Rates of Tubal Ligation Reversal

At Houston Fertility Center, we are always open and honest about your chances of pregnancy following fertility treatments. Our patients in Houston and surrounding Texas regions including Sugar Land trust us to deliver great results and reliable information on reproductive treatments. Here are some important details that may help you decide if this procedure is right for you:

Several Factors Can Determine Success

The success rate of tubal reversal can vary widely depending on the patient's age, the type of tubal sterilization they previously underwent, and their overall health. If you and your partner have no other fertility issues and the reversal is successful, then you have a good chance of getting pregnant in the first two years after the procedure. Other fertility issues will decrease the success rates of tubal reversal.

Many Patients Achieve Success

In a study published in the Journal of International Medical Research, over 55 percent of patients under the age of 40 became pregnant after undergoing a tubal reversal. The chances increased to almost 70 percent for patients aged 35 or younger.

There Are Associated Risks

As with any surgery, there is always a chance that the procedure is not successful or that complications can occur. Most of the risks associated with tubal reversal surgery are rare, but they include bleeding, infection, anesthesia complications, and ectopic pregnancy.

Will My Tubal Ligation Reversal Be Successful?

It could be. Success rates are dependent upon several factors including the type of tubal procedure that your surgeon used and how well the tube can be restored back to its original condition. If rings or clips were used during your ligation or a small section of the fallopian tubes were removed, a reversal can have a high success rate. Methods that remove large sections of the fallopian tubes or remove the fimbrial portion of the fallopian tube have a very low success rate.

Additionally, other factors can affect the chances of a successful pregnancy even if the tubal reversal surgery is successful. Advanced age, decreased ovarian function, and low sperm quality can all decrease your chances of successful fertilization.

Do I have other options to become pregnant?

Dr. Kristiansen Offers Many Fertility Treatment Options Find One That's Right for You

At our fertility center serving Houston, Sugar Land, and other parts of Texas, we provide comprehensive evaluations of your reproductive system to try to detect potential fertility issues.

If there are any factors that could affect the success of your tubal reversal, you may be better suited for assisted reproductive technologies offered at our clinic such as INVOcell or IVF.

During IVF, the eggs are fertilized outside of the uterus, bypassing the need for fallopian tubes to conceive a child. We provide several options and do everything we can to help you achieve the family of your dreams.
